TWC Archive is a free online encyclopedia, the primary purpose of which is to preserve information regarding The Weather Channel, its programming, its major personalities, its fandom, its technology, major events, and other related topics.

Background

There have been a variety of attempts throughout Internet history to document information about The Weather Channel. The earliest included websites such as TWC Classics and its forum. However, these were not encyclopedic in nature. This led to members of the channel's fan community beginning to document information about the channel, first on Wikipedia. Attempts to document the channel on Wikipedia were largely unsuccessful, as editors from the fandom and seasoned Wikipedia editors disagreed over supposed "notability" issues with some articles as well as what constituted acceptable reference sources. For example, given that The Weather Channel is a television network, many notable on-air changes were only documented through recorded video and some occasional documents released by the network, which some on Wikipedia deemed "too closely associated with the subject" despite these often being the only available sources. By the mid-2010s, many articles about The Weather Channel's Weather Star technology, for example, were either deleted or merged into other only slightly related articles.

History

The TWC Archive website was created by and continues to be maintained by popular fandom YouTube personality TWCKelby. The website was originally released to a limited audience on February 8, 2018, so that the project would launch publicly with a baseline of existing content to build from. Through 2019, articles would be created and edited sporadically as users had free time. Eventually, on May 10, 2020, the website was made public, and registration was opened.

On May 16, 2022, in preparation for the website's 2-year anniversary, fandom personality and staff member wxTV designed what continues to be the current logo. Corresponding with this change was the announcement on May 27, 2022, of a new front page in similar fashion to the front page of Wikipedia, which was put up for user approval. The newly-designed front page was deployed on July 24, 2022.

Current state

Given the project's age and relatively small userbase, many of the articles currently available on the site are at various stages of completion. An extensive effort is currently underway to resolve this issue, but as many more topics still need to be covered and documented, the number of articles will likely continue to expand at the same time.

Content and registration policies

TWC Archive is free to visit and create/edit articles on; however, user registration is required in order to edit and create articles. This policy was enacted in order to avoid spambots and reduce the risk of vandalism. All edits and new pages are required to adhere to the website's content policies, which include standards for punctuation and grammar as well as total prohibitions on content such as internal assets belonging to The Weather Channel, the promotion of any routes to obtain such content, and explicit adult material.
