André Bernier is a former on-air meteorologist for The Weather Channel best known for being one of two of the first on-air personalities ever seen on the network upon its launch on May 2, 1982, alongside Bruce Edwards. Bernier was among the original meteorologists featured upon the network and remained there until 1985. He later became a longtime on-air meteorologist at WJW, the Fox affiliate serving Cleveland, Ohio, from 1988 until May 2024,[1] and is currently heard on WKJA-FM, Heartfelt Radio, a local Christian radio station in Barberton, Ohio.[2]

Early life and education

Bernier was born on May 22, 1959, and grew up in New Bedford, Massachusetts. In his early years, Bernier was a monolingual French speaker.[3]

After graduating, Bernier began his career in 1981 as the staff meteorologist at KGAN-TV, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. In 1982, he joined the initial group of meteorologists to be featured on The Weather Channel, which launched on May 2nd of that year. Bernier and one of his coworkers, Bruce Edwards, were the meteorologists chosen to be first on the air. Bernier would be a morning meteorologist for the rest of his time there. Bernier left his position at The Weather Channel in 1985, motivated by a desire to be closer to his now-wife, Sally, who was on the air herself as a meteorologist in the Minneapolis, Minnesota, area.

Bernier would serve as the staff meteorologist at KARE-TV, the NBC affiliate for the Minneapolis area. His wife noticed an open meteorologist position at WJW-TV in Cleveland, Ohio, which was her hometown, and encouraged Bernier to apply. He went through with this plan, and with the aid of Dick Goddard, one of Ohio's most well-known meteorologists as well as a friend of his, Bernier successfully took the position at WJW in January 1988.

Bernier would remain at WJW for just over 36 years. On April 26, 2024, he announced his upcoming retirement on-air, which occurred on his birthday, May 22.

Personal life and other projects

Bernier is married to Sally Bernier, who was herself a meteorologist well known in the Cleveland television scene prior to retiring in 2008 to help raise their son, Noah.[2] Sally can be heard today on WKJA-FM alongside her husband on Sundays as a meteorologist.[4]

Bernier is an ordained minister through the Evangelical Church Alliance, having been ordained in May 2006.[5][2] He previously served as interim pastor at three separate churches in Ohio and is currently active in ministry as the interim pastor of First Covenant Church, Willoughby Hills, Ohio.[2][6]

Bernier runs a podcast, The WeatherJazz Podcast, as well as a personal website featuring blog posts, weather data and forecasts, podcast episodes, and recordings of his sermons.[7]
